Round table “Reducing air pollution in industrial centers - a balance of interests between ecology and economy” was held on April 19

24 April 2019

Scientific Director of NIIAT JSC Vadim Donchenko spoke at the roundtable which is a part of the All-Russian Environmental Forum “Clean Country” in Chelyabinsk city. The issues of improving the environmental safety of vehicles were discussed during the Forum, as well as the theme of the negative consequences of the transport functioning.

Vadim Donchenko noted in his speech that the total damage from vehicle in Russia is estimated at 5-8% of GDP per year, and also it accounts for about 40% of the total emissions of pollutants into the atmospheric air. But in cities, this figure is closer to 70-90 per cent. It is estimated that more people in Russia die each year as a result of air pollution than road traffic crashes.

The roundtable considered issues related to requiring urgent solutions in these areas and measures for environmental safety and sustainable transport.

It was stressed that this could be achieved with implementation of activities in three areas: improvement of the environmental performance of the transport; improving the environmental performance of the fuels / types of energy; reduction the total road vehicle kilometres.

These measures should be included in the city plans (programs) of “sustainable” urban mobility.
